When it’s freezing cold in Michigan, the family sessions don’t stop- and shouldn’t stop. This is when we do a studio family session!
There’s something about having a blank canvas (or nearly blank) that speaks to me. I love studio family sessions for this reason. It’s just you and your loved ones, in an environment that allows for me to create and try new things. I have a couple of different studios that I use for my family and maternity sessions- one in Pontiac at LMP Collective, another in Ann Arbor at StudioStudio, and a few in Royal Oak. We did this family session at LMP Collective. It’s located on the 7th floor of the Riker Building, and it has such a cool downtown scene. The whole building itself has countless little shooting spots (including a parking garage, that we didn’t venture to this day, since it was 35 degrees, but I am dyingggg to shoot there this Spring). This studio is great for newborn sessions even, because they have a bed (which is an area I use a lot during newborn sessions).
Another thing that speaks to my soul with this session- how big their family is. Gahhh I love working with big families; love the dynamic, the personalities all meshing and blending into one, the chaos (not even joking, I love your chaos- bring it all to me!), just everything. They were perfectly imperfect, beautiful together, and such a unit. Which made this even more special for me to document.
So to summarize- have more babies, embrace the wild, and do your family session in a studio. Yes, I love exploring outsides with my clients, and love all of the nature Michigan has to offer with my outside locations. But give me a studio family session, and I know we are going to create something beautiful and real, and we’re going to do it together.
