This family picnic photoshoot in Brighton, MI was the perfect example of what happens when a family chooses connection and experience over perfectly posed portraits. Blankets in the grass, snacks being passed around, kids eating allll the snacks- it felt more like a slow afternoon together than a photoshoot. And that’s exactly the point.

Family photos don’t have to mean standing in a field and asking your kids to smile at the camera. My best sessions happen when we throw the traditional stuff out completely. When kids have something to do, everything changes.
Instead of asking them to stand still and smile, they get to explore, snack, laugh, and interact naturally. A picnic session gives everyone permission to relax.
Parents stop worrying about whether their kids are behaving.
Kids forget a camera is even there.
And suddenly the moments become real.
It’s playful, chaotic, and completely authentic- which is exactly what childhood looks like.
Letting Go of “Perfect” Family Photos
One of the biggest things I tell families before a session is this:
Your kids don’t need to sit still.
They don’t need to smile on command.
They just need to be themselves.
Unconventional sessions- like picnics, backyard hangouts, neighborhood walks, or trips to the ice cream shop, allow your family to interact the way you naturally do every day. Those are the memories your kids will recognize later. Not the perfectly posed ones. The real ones.

Planning a Picnic Family Photoshoot in Brighton, MI
If you’re thinking about doing a picnic session, it can be as simple or styled as you want. Some easy ideas include:
-
A blanket and basket with fruit or pastries
-
Lemonade or juice boxes for the kids
-
A favorite family snack
-
A park or open field where kids can roam
The goal isn’t to create a perfect picnic spread- it’s to create an environment where your family can slow down and enjoy time together.
